Beginning is part of an ongoing research project that examines the area of the Westbahnpark in Vienna – a space caught between privatization, environmental activism, and political stagnation. While plans range from luxury housing to a vast park or even the world‘s longest swimming pool, the area already hosts its own life – teenagers drink on abandoned platforms, security guards kill time, snails settle in the bushes, and underground drifting competitions take place at night.

Using digitally composited unveilings, the video shifts the common focus and highlights the space and its inhabitants in their current state and usage. Exposing what is already there redirects this attention and tries to avoid the trap of seeing it only through dystopian anxieties or distant, utopian ideals. Still, the green fabric could be used as a green screen to insert new worlds and images – acting as a bearer of plural possibilities itself.
